Our Strategies

Advocacy

Together with our partners and allies we continue to influence the effective implementation of the international and continental commitments such as – ICPD+25, CEDAW 1979, African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights (1981), African Charter on the Rights and welfare of Children 1990, Maputo Protocol 2003, Africa Youth Charter 2006, Continental Policy on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights 2006, SDGs 2016 (SDG 3 & 5), Universal Health Coverage High Level Meeting at the UN General Assembly 2019, Solemn declaration on Gender Equality in Africa, Agenda 2063 and the East and Southern African Commitment on Comprehensive Sexuality Education ((CSE) 2021.

We strengthen the influencing capacity of local partners by equipping them with evidence and right-based advocacy and campaigning skills which in turn increase their ability to develop and implement advocacy and campaign strategies to influence changes in policy, social norms and attitudes toward full access to SRHR for all. Acquired skills enhance their capacity to amplify the voice of communities they serve in national, regional and global policy discussions to ensure that – policies are informed by grassroots realities; and – mechanisms are set to feedback policy shifts to their communities.

Campaign

WGNRR Africa’s

Campaigns respond to struggles for SRHR, justice and dignity around the world. We provide leadership in articulating and seeking strategic ways to address critical SRHR issues of marginalized communities, and support calls for reproductive justice initiated and undertaken by grassroots advocates/activists to advance SRHR of marginalized women communities and other key populations (PwDs, people living with HIV/AIDs, refugees, internally displaced, slum dwellers and other systematically marginalized people).

We also support the efforts of community health workers’ to have dignity and justice in carrying out their professional duties to meet the SRH needs of the communities under their care, as well as the broad demand for universal, public, accessible, affordable and quality health coverage that is inclusive, non-discriminatory, and coercion/stigma free.

Together with our partners, we campaign in a number of ways: firstly, via our own letter writing, petitions and actions at community, national and regional levels. Secondly, by supporting the campaign activities of partners, allies and those working towards similar SRHR objectives. Lastly, by encouraging and supporting our partners to take actions in support of WGNRR Africa and its allies’ call for actions.

WGNRR Africa contributes to two major global campaigns, the May 28 International Day of Action for Women’s Health and the September 28 Day of Action for Access to Safe and Legal Abortion, and supports many other regional and global initiatives.

Networking and alliance strengthening

Networking is one of the key strategies WGNRR Africa uses to strengthen movements for SRHR. We connect local CSOs, local government units, development partners; research institutes and many others key stakeholders as well as individuals from different fields of expertise to support the SRHR agenda of marginalized communities. We also enhance local, national, cross-national partnerships and alliances among SRHR/human rights activists/advocates and between movements in order to better coordinate strategies and actions. We deepen relationships with other social movements such as disability, climate change and HIV/AIDS movements to create a common understanding of SRHR and its importance in achieving sustainable development goals.

We are committed to work more with existing national SRHR networks/coalitions; and where they do not exist; we work to establish new ones. We further assist them to link their issues as a way to strengthen actions and share learnings

Capacity strengthening & communications

Internal and external capacity development and provision of a range of communication mediums cut across all WGNRR Africa’s work.

Internally, WGNRR Africa strengthens its staff knowledge and skills to enhance our operational capacity, strengthen our management systems, procedures, and resource mobilization capacity. Externally, we conduct skills building activities and provide resources to improve the ability of grassroots advocates/activists to demand SRHR and seek accountability for Sexual and Reproductive Justice (SRJ) at all levels. We provide a range of communication mediums including website, social media, mobile apps, SMS platforms and face to face activities for linking, learning and resource sharing.
