Our Work

WGNRR Africa works to coordinate and support grassroots initiatives aimed at creating an environment where all people across Africa are able to fulfil their SRHR including their right to make informed decision about their own body, sex and sexuality, and as if and when to have children (ICPD…); right to universal access to sexual and reproductive health services and information (SDG3.7, 3.8 and SDG 5.6).

We champion the Rights-based approach on SRH with a grassroots partnership base through a reproductive justice framework

Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) are human rights. The right to the highest attainable standard of health includes gender equality in health, and sexual and reproductive health. The essence of our right-based approach through a reproductive justice framework is to promote the freedom of choice and full access to SRH services and information by organizing and empowering women, girls and their communities to challenge structural power inequalities. We support the use of human rights accountability mechanism to highlight SRHR violations and hold duty bearers accountable for not fulfilling their human rights obligations.

Specifically, together with our local partners, we:

  • Advocate and campaign for the transformation of structures, systems and power that reinforce inequalities and obstruct full access to SRHR for the most marginalized groups, to ensure the society’s response to the SRH needs of women and young people is based on information and practices that helps them understand their sexuality, protect themselves from irresponsible sexual behavior and exercise their bodily autonomy.
  • Mobilise and educate communities to address drivers of unwanted pregnancies, gender based violence, preventable maternal deaths, harmful practices and their consequences on women and girls’ health outcomes.
  • Promote equal relationships in matters of sexuality and reproduction, including full respect for bodily integrity, mutual respect and acceptance of responsibility for the consequences of sexual behavior.
  • Connect grassroots voices and strengthen their leadership in influencing the development and implementation of local, national, regional and global policies. We work to ensure policy development is informed by the realities of the most historically marginalized communities.
  • Create/share resources and platforms for mutual linking and learning and build solidarity for collective actions.
