The Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights Africa (WGNRR Africa) grew from a mere regional coordination office of the WGNRR Foundation to a well-established Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) currently headquartered in the city of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania after gaining our own legal entity in 2016. We are a regional affiliate of WGNRR Foundation and are wholly committed to its vision, goals, and values.
This transition ignited as a response to the autonomy need expressed by the African WGNRR’s constituency in advancing women’s reproductive rights and justice from an African perspective and context, and for a stronger coordination of their actions at local, national and levels.
We operate semi-autonomously in the Africa region while maintaining some level of governance and management accountability to WGNRR Foundation.
We are a grassroots-led feminist network of partners and allies, all being grassroots and community organizations and individuals committed to sexual and reproductive health rights and leading a movement of activists and advocates of gender, rights, and justice. We promote and support initiatives that support women and girls in their diversity to fulfill their right to make their own and informed decisions on their bodies and as if and when to have children, free from coercion, violence, stigma and discrimination. We work to ensure Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) are respected and fulfilled as universal and indivisible human rights for all people, with an emphasis on the most marginalized communities.
It is estimated 407 million women of reproductive age in 2030 will have inadequate sexual and reproductive health services over the course of their lives across Africa. The many manifestations of this lack of SRHRJ include a high number of unwanted (teenage) pregnancies, many unsafe abortions, high maternal mortality and morbidity, a continuation of the HIV-epidemic and large groups of girls undergoing Female Genital Mutilation and/or being married before they are 18.
We focus on Sexual and reproductive health and rights and justice (SRHRJ) because they have a linkage to gender equality and women’s wellbeing; they impact maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health; and they play critical roles in shaping future economic development and environmental sustainability. They are therefore essential for sustainable development.
WGNRR Africa envisages an Africa continent where all people can fulfil their sexual and reproductive rights. We work within the rights, justice, and feminist frameworks.
Through critical analysis and strategic actions, WGNRR Africa connects partners, allies and SRHR stakeholders; strengthen their capacities; organize advocacy and campaign actions on feminist, SRHR, and justice issues; and share resources.
We are focused on our partners and allies, inclusive and accountable in all that we do.We are committed to equality for all genders and value diversity.
