WGNRR Africa Congratulates Sierra Leone for  Passing the Historic Bill to End Child Marriage

WGNRR Africa extends its heartfelt congratulations to Sierra Leone for the victorious and historic achievement of passing  the bill to end child marriage on 21st June 2024. The bill sets 18 years as minimum legal marriage age in Sierra Leone. This vital step represents a significant victory in the global fight for the rights and well-being of girls, ensuring that they are protected and empowered to reach their full potential.

We recognize that this legislation did not emerge overnight, it’s the culmination of years of dedicated advocacy, beginning with grassroots efforts and bolstered by the support of the community, local NGOs and international organizations. Through relentless campaigning and collaboration with policymakers, the groundwork was laid for this transformative change. The enactment of this bill into the national law sets an important ground for Sierra Leone to not only support adolescents to fulfil their several human rights, but extensively  to set up comprehensive support systems to ensure its effectiveness.

Child marriage is a grave violation of human rights and a significant contributor to the violation of  girls’ sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) . It often leads to early pregnancies, which are associated with higher risks of complications and maternal mortality. Moreover, child marriage curtails girls’ access to education and limits their opportunities for personal and professional development. By ending child marriage, Sierra Leone has taken a decisive tep in addressing these critical issues and laying the foundation for a healthier and more equitable society.

We commend Sierra Leone for this landmark achievement and stand in solidarity with the people of Sierra Leone as it embarks on this new chapter. This historic bill is not just a victory for Sierra Leone but an inspirational example for many African  countries striving to end child marriage and uphold the SRHR of all young girls.

While recognizing this victory, let’s remind Sierra Leonese people that putting in place legislations is one crucial step, but implementing these legislations effectively is another thing. To ensure effectiveness of the legislation to end child marriage, it should be accompanied by comprehensive support systems including implementing policies that promote access to education for all girls, providing comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education and services, and creating community programs that raise awareness about the importance of ending child marriage. Such holistic approach will help to rip the dividend of the victory we are celebrating today.

Congratulations once again, Sierra Leone! Together, let’s create a continent where every girl has the opportunity to thrive.

In solidarity,

WGNRR Africa
