Supporting partners’ implementation of self-developed advocacy strategies in East Africa

In March 2022, financial and technical support was given to groups of women with disabilities through Sauti ya Wanawake wenye Ulemavu Tanzania (SWAUTA) to prepare their agenda for a high level advocacy meeting with the Head of State of Tanzania. This support covered the cost of their meeting with the Prime Minister’s Office, Labor, Youth, Employment & with Disabilities in Dodoma. This advocacy effort culminated in a high-level advocacy meeting with her Excellency, Mama Samia Suluhu Hassan, the president of the United Republic of Tanzania at the State House in Chamwino, Dodoma. From that meeting, the head of state made bold commitments to improve the conditions of persons with disabilities including their maternal and reproductive health needs. Watch this video.

Since early April, financial and ongoing technical support is provided to 8 grassroots organizations of youth SRHR activists in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda to implement a number of strategies to destigmatize young people’s access to a range of SRH issues including access to contraceptives, access to safe abortion and post abortion care, access to comprehensive sexuality education and access to menstrual heath information and commodities. Their strategies mostly focus on normalizing the discourse around these topics in their communities. Read more in “Ground breaking partners’ work” section
